JE2 - Task 1 Game Story Development

Story

Your a camera man that owns a TV show online and your filming episode 6 for season 3 you don't know it but this is the last episode.You have an obsession for abandoned houses you. You go to one house that has been abandoned for over 5 years. This isn't just any house this is the house where a family of 3 committed suicide one after the other. This house is also believed to be haunted by not only the family that died but also by a ghost that also committed suicide outside the house by hanging herself on the swing. you don't know about the haunting's and deaths.you just think it is an abandoned house. The horrors that await in the house you wont be leaving anytime soon. Your first objective is to enter the house and tour around filming your every move. After you witness a ghost passing your next objective is to follow the ghost and see what is going on. After witnessing why the house is really abandoned your only real objective is to escape with any means necessary.You are inside a room with the other doors locked.

Setting 

The abandoned house is located in the middle of a forest and is found by walking down a dirt road. The house is guarded by a metal fence and that is secured by a metal lock that requires a metal key. Inside the gate is a swing that is attached to a very old tree that only has one branch. Past the tree is he house itself, The house from the outside it has a porch that has a wooden chair swing hanging from the ceiling. The porch is broken and has 2 stairs that are on he edge of breaking. When arrived at the door there are barricades blocking the front door. All the windows ave metal cages on them so there isn't any escape. Inside the house you are first greeted to a walkway with family pictures and 3 rooms the closest room is the families lounge which has 2 sofas, a table that is covered in dust, a fire place and a book case. The next room is the kitchen that has blood all over the walls, The kitchen has a dining table in the middle which has 2 pots on them both which are empty the cooker has a pan on it which is also empty but covered in blood.The final room is the Dads office which was used for him to do his work and to keep all his files in one place, this room however isn't filled with blood or insects this room is filled with the family of 3's bodies that are rotting time after time. You are also in level with a set of stairs that takes you up to the second floor which was the families bedrooms. The first bedroom was where the daughter slept this room is fulled with spiders and other insects, The bedroom is also filled with blood patches. The smell of the room is of blood and other dead thing like rats and other animals from the forest. The second bedroom is the Mum and Dads bedroom, this bedroom smells exactly the same however it looks different, The master bed is covered with a dead deer's body that is rotting away with bones and the deer's eyes popping out with maggots eating on the deer and eyes. the room next to the master bedroom is the bathroom that is filled with dead insects and blood on the mirror above the sink, the sink is filled with blood. There is a walkway past the bathroom that has a door at the end the door is locked however on the other side of the door is a set of stairs that lead up to the houses attic. The attic is empty except there is a small TV in the corner that is somehow connected to a power supply in a house that has no electricity, The TV is turned on and is playing the same video over and over again, It is the video of how the family of 3 committed suicide. 

Backstory

You take control of Alex Jackson who has an obsession for abandoned houses. He gained his obsession when his sister was possessed and taken by the evil ones while they were in an abandoned house. From now on hes obsession with abandoned houses is to try and find the ghoul that taken his sister. with him also combining footage of the abandoned houses and making it into a full time TV Show, The audience don't know his real reason why he is going into all these abandoned houses. He was born in London, England on 7.11.1986, When his sister was taken at the age of 14, It has been his destiny to find his sisters taker and possibly get her back.  

Characters (Including Antagonist, Protagonist, Sidekick, Player Character etc).

Antagonist: As the antagonist the main foe in the story would be the ghoul whose name is Mason Bailey  who took you sister as you have to track down who it was an why he took her and that it is your destiny to track down them. 

Protagonist: As the protagonist you play as Alex Jackson who is a celebrity in the real world, who is famous for touring abandoned houses, He has made 3 Seasons of his TV Show however he has a dark past when he was 14 years old him and his sister were adventuring around an abandoned house when a ghoul abducted his sister and now hes a rich celebrity and when e sees an abandoned house he must search it for ghouls with a piece of technology that he has. Alex has Blonde hair and has blue eyes with as medium height and weight build. He has a missing ring finger that he lost when he was trying to fight off a against a ghoul. He has half an ear on his left ear. He wears glasses as he is short sighted and he has a glass eye that when he was fighting the same ghoul he lost sight in his eye.

Character Backstories

The Back story of Mason Bailey is it all started when he was 16 years old he was having a party with all his family and friends, when he saw someone move outside in the bushes, He ignored it and carried on with the party, When the time reached 11:00pm there was a loud knock on the door, Mason went to answer the door and 4 people wearing chicken masks barged through the door and shot all of the people inside including Mason, the start of the massacre was the end for this rich family and was the end for Mason, up until mason is now haunting everyone that enters the house.

The backstory for Alex is he and his family went on a camping trip when his sister asked him to join her on an exploration around the camping area. When they arrived in the woods they came across a huge wall that was surrounded by metal gates in the middle and over this wall was the manor of the Baileys. when they traversed over the wall they were approached by the groundskeeper of the manor and he told them the story of the house. obviously they didn't believe him and they still went into the house. while in the house they approached the attic and saw a silver chest with the family crest engraved on the lock, Alex found the key to the chest and unlocked it, When the chest was unlocked the room filled with fog and the ghost of Mason Bailey was released and took Alex's sister. You run back and your family attempt to find he's sister but there isn't any success. 10 years later and your now a rich celebrity who enters abandoned houses trying to find your sisters taker and possibly your sister. Every house he goes in he records into an episode.

Top down view of environment

This is a top down view of my environment that i created in unity. The grey area shows where the player is able to walk, The red boxes show the furniture in the haunted house showing that in the top left box that is the living space where the family sits and talks and the bottom of the house that is where the family would eat. The brown boxes show the bookshelves in the house. The orange box shows the fire place in the living area and the purple lines show off both of the locked doors.

Task 1 – Forms of Storytelling

Text: There are quite a lot of games that are based from books and some games have little cameos from there books. The assassins creed game is based from the 1930's novel Alamut, which is about a small group of assassins known as the Hashshashin that have taken on a mission, These assassins use the motto "Nothing is an absolute reality, all is permitted.". In the first Assassins Creed game it takes place in the crusades and is based around a powerful assassin known as Altar who is battling against an enemy group known as the Templar's to try and receive magical artifacts. Alamut doesn't talk a lot about the magical artifacts. what makes he book and game more relative is that the game uses the same motto "Nothing is true, everything is permitted."

There are also games that are based from comic books for example The Walking Dead this is one of the most popular comic book series. The comic books are based on a group of survivors taking on the world that has been taken down by a zombie apocalypse and trying to survive around the dangers with it being other human survivors or the hordes of zombies that await ahead. The telltales game is like a living comic book where you take control of the characters and you decide what happens, your actions decide on how the story concludes. The game is also based on survivors trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. Although the comic books are released in issues, The game is released every 1-2 years and is released with 1-5 episodes that release every 3 weeks.

Theater: It is hard to find a game that is based on theater. The only game that would relate to games would be Puppeteer, where the player takes control of a puppet and uses skills of a puppet to move around the world. At the beginning of the game curtains slide across from the side of the screen making it look like a play is about to start.

  

Film: Almost every film has a game for example, Alien Vs Predator was released in 2004, the story behind the movie is that it is based at a fighting ground where the Aliens and Predators fight .As it hasn't happened in century's the humans discover a tunnel that leads to the hunting arena. This sends a distress signal up to the predators causing them to land and kill who ever is at the arena. The humans are then under attack with Aliens (xenomorphs). This causes a war between all 3.

The Alien Vs Predator game is based of the film the only difference being is that you as the player take control of all 3 classes to all have a different outcome. The marines are there to destroy the alien pods and kill there queen. when you take control of the predator you fight both aliens and marines using a set of skills and weapons like a laser blaster or a spear and when you are the alien you move more stealthily as youonly have your claws, tail and bite actions to defend yourself against the Maines gun power and the predators abilities.

  

Television: Some games are based of TV shows, not every TV show has a game based off of it, like The Simpsons. The Simpsons has a game based off the show The Simpsons Hit an Run which was released in 2003 where you was given Springfield as the open world and had mechanics from games like Grand Theft Auto, where you could steal peoples cars and fight any civilian you wanted to. The Simpsons Hit and Run lets the players take control of all the Simpsons family and some of the extra characters that are shown in the TV series.

Another game based off of a TV show is Game Of Thrones. The Games Of Thrones game takes place in six episodes where each episode is based off a different house.The players take control of each of the characters and choose there actions through out the episodes, your actions decide whether the character is safe to live or one more step to die.

The Game Of Thrones TV show takes place in Westeros which is a fictional place where it is split between seven kingdoms. Each kingdom has a ruler where all rulers hate a different ruler and theres a war between each of the kingdoms. The biggest war between is a race to the throne.

Task 2 – Storytelling within Genre’s

First Person Shooter (FPS): The Fps genre is very popular and is getting more popular year by year with the franchise of call of duty out every year. The Call of Duty franchise tells the story of you play as the new recruit and have to take out an enemy that is planning on destroying a certain part of the world.When call of Duty first released it was during actual wars and now the Call of Duty teams are designing on the games based on wars that could happen in 10-20 years.FPS games implement a story because the camera is the narrative and is being told like you are in the game.

Third Person Shooter (TPS): More and more games are releasing within the TPS genre. Metal gear solid has one of the most powerful stories. There have been so many games in the series and have all been amazing. the player takes control of someone called snake who works for a company called FOXHOUND the player is given a different mission within all the different games. The missions to the games can both be finished multiple ways either stealthily or full on action. The story to the game is being told as you play.  

Role playing Game (RPG): RPG games are one of the most played games in the genre. The overall best RPG game would be the Elder Scrolls franchise. The Elder Scrolls story are that in depth, you create a character from a selection of races, then you are given are certain task to complete to enter the main game. the game changes on your actions depending on whose side you are on. All RPG games have a character creation and the player is following that character on its journey and  the Players have been with that character from the start and that the character is unique in its own way.   

Fighting: Mortal Kombat would have to be one of the most brutal games ever made the first game was released in 1992 and was first an arcade game. Because the game was that popular it made its release on console and is still now one of the best fighting games. The story to Mortal Kombat is different every game and is based on a linear path. Mortal kombat released a game with a character customization feature where you control that character and learn a bunch of new skills and moves in order to become more powerful. 

  

Sport: NBA 2k16 is a sports game with a very interesting story mode. When first starting the game you have to create a character. The story mode starts with the character you have made starting at High school and you play on the schools basketball team you then advance on to college and dependin on how good you play you will be selected onto a certain team and will have to play for that team. Depending on how you play you will be given a salary and if you play good you will earn a good salary, If you are bad you could be sold to a different team.

Strategy: Civilization 5 would be a good game to say it has a good story as the game is online and requires strategic ways of taking down the enemy. You take control of an army and are given a little section of the map. Your objective is to take control of the entire world by destroying the enemy players armies. The games story can end in 2 ways, You win and take control or you lose and your army gets wiped out. The army you create is unique in its own way as you decide what happens to it when playing for example you can demand or trade items and can decide what you army looks like. The story is basically told by the player.

Simulation: The most popular Simulation game would be The sims. The sims is basically a simulation on life. you first create a family and then create somewhere for the family to live, After that you design what goes in the house and what happens to the family. The story to Sims is keeping the family alive and making sure they don't die. The player can decide what happens to the family by making them get jobs and even host parties. The player is also capable of destroying the house and building the family an even bigger and more better house, The choice on the story is up to the player.

Task 3 – Representation

Stereotypes in games.

when it comes to stereotypes in video games, almost every game has stereotypes within the games industry. Some stereotypes in games include racism and sexism.

Sexism in games has been a big part of the games industry as most of the gamers are male. A big game that has had sexism in the game is Tomb Raider. when a female hero in the game is half naked. Lara Croft has been the half naked heroic ever since its first appearance in 1996.

Racism in games is the most offensive stereotype that is in games as most games in this year include racism. One of the biggest game franchises that include racism is Grand Theft Auto. Grand Theft Auto includes some of the most foul language that can be said. In Grand Theft Auto V you take control of 3 People Trevor and Michael who are white and Franklin who is black. When taking control of Franklin Your job is to Steal vehicles this is racist as the game is saying that all Black People steal. Also when taking control of Franklin your character uses the 'N' word a lot.

Another game that uses sexism is Mortal Kombat. When taking control of a female fighter you for example Jade and Kitana are sisters and wear the same outfit but in different colors these 2 characters are piratically naked or are show areas of the body.These 2 characters wear the same outfit in every Mortal Kombat game. This is sexist as the game producers are saying that only male gamers play Mortal Kombat.

Another game that has racism in there game is Dead island. The game includes a Black rapper of course if there was to be a crazy rapper during a zombie apocalypse he would be black. This game is racist as the makers of the games are say that all African Americans are black.

Task 4 – Emotion

Happiness: When it comes to happiness in video games Super Mario Bros shows a lot of happiness. On Mario he shows Happiness when he is making his journey through all the level environments he is showing he is happy. The only part in Super Mario where he is not showing happiness is where Princess Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser.

Vengeance: Assassins Creed 2 is a game that is all about vengeance. You play as Ezio who is just a normal guy living in Italy where your dad gets arrested and killed along with all your brothers. when looking through your dads things you find an assassins costume with all weapons. You then decide to get revenge on those that killed your dad and brothers

Fear: When it comes to fear in video games Silent Hill would be one of the most popular as each game has the same dark and scary tune to it, with the scary music and the weather effect it gives the game its scary feeling. The weather effect to the game includes a pitch black background with only a bit of light and with a fog effect. As the game has a lot of fog it makes the game hard as you dont know what enemies or obstacles are in the way.

Anger: When it comes to anger a lot of game characters dont show when there angry however a lot of anger is shown in Far Cry 3 with an insanity villain called Vaas your objective is to save all your friend and to get off the insanity of an island. Vaas shows a lot of anger as you come across him from the start of the game when you awake locked in a cage. when you take out one of his most valuable outposts you see what Vaas is really like when his insanity side kicks in.

Perseverance: in the last 10 years there has been a lot of games that require a lot of patience and time because they are that difficult. From Software is a game developer company that is one of the best at making the hardest games from making Demon Souls to moving onto harder games like the Dark Souls franchise and then to making Bloodborne. all these games are hard and require skill and require you to kill a certain amount of monsters and ghouls to then come across some of the tallest and most powerful bosses in gaming story

Heroism: Every game shows heroism because you play as a character who is given an objective and your job is to do that objective for example in Sonic the Hedgehog your objective is to get passed all the levels and to defeat Dr egg-man. 

Valour: With most games there is a valour character however the most valour character would have to be Link from the Zelda franchise because no matter what happens in the games he is always able to complete his objectives. With him meeting obstacles round every corner he still manages to find a way to get over the obstacles. 

Hope: When the word hope is said i think of a zombie apocalypse. The Last of Us is one of the best games involved withing the zombie apocalypse genre. Ellie was born within the apocalypse so she hasn't seen what the world was like before the virus. Ellie is a 14 year old teenager that has the potential cure of the virus and is one of the main character within The Last of Us game. 

Competitiveness: A lot of games in this century are all about being competitive, from call of duty to fifa. When it comes to competitive games the one hat stands out the most would be Call of Duty as the game has its own league and as had it for quite a few years. The Esports league features rounds and rounds of teams of people playing against each other to see which team is the overall best Call of Duty player.
